Through the 'window' (full title - Through the 'window': the discovery of the interior and exterior self) was a visual essay created as the dissertation for my bachelor's degree. A visual essay in essence is a collection of images and quotations to build up a discussion or argument without the writer's actual written explanation. In Susan Sontag's words as a part of her book On Photography:
"A photograph is only a fragment, and with the passage of time its moorings come unstuck. It drifts away into a soft abstract pastness, open to any kind of reading (or matching to other photographs). A photograph could also be described as a quotation, which makes a book of photographs like a book of quotations. And an increasingly common way of presenting photographs in book form is to match photographs themselves with quotes."
As presented below, my visual essay explored the contradicting relationship between being on the inside and the outside of a window, which then led to the idea of a window being a metaphor for self-expression.
